Yves & John: On our trip through Rwanda & Burundi.

As many of you know, I have recently returned from a three-week trip to East Africa. For those of you who read my blog, you will know that it was my time in Rwanda and Burundi that I felt most inspired about the possibilities and hope I saw in these two countries.

The reason I felt so inspired on this trip is in large part because of the man I am trying to raise money for.

Yves Habumugisha, is a Rwandan national who works for Food For the Hungry. He is a man for whom I have tremendous intellectual respect and represents the ideal of what every NGO worker should be. A national who has stayed in their own country to work tirelessly, passionately and with little pay to solve the problems of his own country and that of his neighbors.

In the summer of 2006, Yves was accepted into a Masters program at Southern New Hampshire University. While most of the classes are online, he is required to travel to the US for the last part of his studies. I am asking my friends, colleagues and family to support me in raising money for Yves' education costs.  It is anticipated that his actual travel costs will be covered, so every penny of your donation will go directly to his education costs.

Investing in the human capital of people like Yves is one of the smartest philanthropic investments we can make. Yves is a person committed to staying in his country to solve his country's problems.   And I know that by further contributing to his academic knowledge, we are providing him even more tools to address the problems of his country.

In his own words:

“My dream for this millennium is a country free of hunger and a people whose struggle is not to survive but to compete with equal chances with others. I will be blessed if I live long to see it happen and if I don’t my pride will be to have contributed towards it. Give me a chance to contribute to alleviating poverty by kindly supporting my studies at Southern New Hampshire University.”

In lieu of Christmas gifts to me, please give generously to this project!
